John
John is a senior certified mindful self-compassion teacher, mindfulness trainer and a clinical social worker registered with Medicare. He has been a mental health professional for around 45 years and has a strong personal commitment to mindfulness and compassion-focused approaches. He is now semi-retired and takes on few new people.
John ran the two first MSC workshops in Australia, both five-day intensives, with Kristy Arbon. He continued deepening his practice and became a certified MSC teacher which he did under the mentorship of Steve Hickman. Before this John attended training run by Jon Kabat-Zinn and Saki Santorelli in 2006 and again in 2008 when they offered that training in Australia. He was initally trained in Calm Abiding (Shamatha) Meditation as a teacher by Lama Choedak Rinpoche in 1998.
Today John combines a knowledge of evolution, cultural anthropology, neuroscience, sociology, mental health, psychology and social work together to work with people synthesizing this knowledge with CFT and IPNB to work with people.
In addition to that John is developing an permaculture with an organic orchard / tree poly-culture and organic vegetable and flower gardens, creatively exploring what it means to develop a capable compassionate love and relationship with and for the Nature and the planet.
John has taught 1000's of people in MSC, MBSR and/ or MBCT 8-week programs, Buddhist Shamatha meditation programs or residential and ‘urban’ retreats. He was trained in MBSR by the founders of that program, Jon Kabat-Zinn and Saki Santorelli. He has been trained in the clinical version, Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy, at Monash University.J
John Julian offers a broad range of counselling and therapy methods to assist people to regain their emotional health and /or to live a more mindful, kind and compassionate life. He is an experienced telehealth and Videa-Conference counsellor. He assists people through direct face to face and online counselling and if they wish, in groups through the Mindful Self-Compassion programs. He uses Cognitive Behaioural Counselling (CBT} as well as the composite therapy known as Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT), alongside specific training in mindfulness and compassion. John is a clinical social worker with over 45 years experience and over 50 years in human services. He was trained in teaching Shamantha meditation in 1998, then Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) at Monash University in 2005, he then went on to learn Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) by Jon Kabat-Zinn in 2006. His passion really took off with Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) and he is now trained as a certified teacher by the University of California San Diego Medical School, USA. He is also one of the authors of several peer reviewed papers on Occupational Mindfulness and another on MSC and cancer. John discovered meditation and mindfulness wellover 30 years ago, originally through various Buddhist schools in order to work with his own anxiety, but now teaches mindfulness and compassion in a secular and practical way, both in groups and one-to-one through Medicare and my private practice . John has taught meditation for over 20 years, having been asked to teach friends in 1997 and being formally taught Shamantha meditation in the Tibetan tradition in 1998. Shamantha means “peaceful abiding” or “tranquility.” Since then John was taught MBSR in a program by the creators of that style and is now also senior certified Mindful Self-Compassion teacher having been invited to attend the inaugral training program by its creators, Kristin Neff and Christopher Germer, in 2014.

John usually provides mindfulness and self-compassion training, as well as one to one counselling, via online or face to face at his home office in South Gippsland.
Regular group programs are also offered. These now include 8-week groups on MBSR/MBCT and Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC), day retreats, and five-day intensive Mindful Self-Compassion retreats. Upcoming programs can be seen on the MANA website.
